By Satyaraja Dasa

How the Gita teaches the eight steps of hatha yoga, the topic of Patanjali's Yoga-sutras.

According to a 2003 survey by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, an estimated 13.4 million Americans practice yoga, and many more experiment with it every year. Yoga is everywhere—from Mumbai to Moscow to Monte Carlo. But while yoga is meant to bring one closer to God, many of today's yogis have a different agenda, the most common being to keep their bodies in shape.

“They’re not necessarily deeply spiritual, but looking more to do yoga as another form of exercise,” says Jennifer McKinley, co-founder and general manager of Plank, a Charlestown, Massachusetts, maker of chic, high-end yoga mats, totes, and other accessories. Launched in 2005, the company projects sales in the upcoming year that will rival that of Western exercise equipment.

In an increasingly secular world, we naturally want to adapt valuable ancient techniques for contemporary purposes, but yoga is losing its essence in the process.

Yoga is a science left to us by the sages of India. The word yoga literally means "to link up," and its implication, originally, was similar to the Latin root of the word religion, which means "to bind back." Thus, yoga and religion are both meant to bring us to the same end: linking up and binding with God.

The Inner Message of the Yoga-sutras

Today's yogis might find it interesting that traditionally the preeminent text on yoga is Bhagavad-gita—not Patanjali's famous Yoga-sutras. But the Gita is not your usual yoga text, full of difficult bodily poses and strenuous meditation techniques. Rather, it offers a practical outline for achieving the goal of yoga—linking with God—by encouraging the chanting of Krishna's names, by teaching how to act under Krishna's order, and by explaining the importance of doing one's duty in spiritual consciousness. These activities, properly performed under the guidance of an adept, allow one to bypass much of what is considered essential in conventional yoga.

And yet there is harmony between the Gita and the Yoga-sutras. For example, both Lord Krishna and Patanjali indicate that we must transcend all false conceptions of "I" and develop love for God, which Patanjali calls ishvara-pranidhana (“dedication to God”).

Patanjali wrote in the third century CE, but little is known about his life. His only surviving text, the Yoga-sutra, would indicate that toned physical and mental tabernacles are helpful in the pursuit of spiritual truth. In fact, his major accomplishment is that he took age-old practices meant for improving the body and the mind and codified them for the benefit of spiritual practitioners.

But Patanjali's Yoga-sutras merely hint at the truths illuminated in the Bhagavad-gita, which might be considered the post-graduate study of Patanjali's work. Even so, Patanjali intended his method to be used for ultimate spiritual benefit, as some of his verses, especially later ones, clarify. Still, many yoga practitioners today use his method solely for physical and mental health because in the beginning of his work Patanjali mainly focuses on basic methods related to the body and the mind, without much spiritual commentary.

In sutra 3.2, for example, we learn that dhyana, or meditation, is the one-pointed continuous movement of the mind toward a single object. But Patanjali's technique can be used for concentration on any object, not just on God. And even though he tells his readers the point of his sutras—to get closer to God—one may be tempted to use his methods for selfish ends, as he says later in the text. Ultimately, one-pointed concentration is for focusing on God, though it's not until one graduates to the Bhagavad-gita that one clearly learns how to do this.

As Professor Edwin Bryant points out in his excellent article "Patanjali's Theistic Preference, Or, Was the Author of the Yoga-sutras a Vaishnava?"1 Patanjali was trying to gear his diverse audience toward the worship of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, even if he was doing so in a roundabout way. Much like today, many forms of religion beleaguered the India of his time; practitioners worshiped numerous aspects of the Supreme. Consequently, he opted for a stepwise approach in his Yoga-sutras that he believed would accommodate his varied audience.

Still, he asserts that the ultimate object of meditation is Ishvara, which means "controller" and generally refers to God. Although there are many controllers and many forms of the Godhead, Bhagavad-gita (18.61) says that the ultimate ishvara is Krishna. Other texts tell us this as well. Consider the ancient Brahma-samhita (5.1):

ishvarah-paramah krishnah
sac-cid-ananda vigrahah
anadir adir govindah
sarva-karana-karanam

"Krishna, who is known as Govinda, is the Supreme Godhead [ishvarah-paramah]. He has an eternal blissful spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin, and He is the prime cause of all causes."
Patanjali advises his audience to choose an ishta-devata, a deity of their choice. His reasoning is transparent: He is trying to teach a method of meditation, and learning this method is easiest if one practices on a subject close to one's heart.

Did Patanjali have Krishna in mind when he outlined the yoga process and its goal of love of God? For one learned in the Vedic literature, it is obvious that the answer is yes. In the words of Edwin Bryant:

Krishna is . . . promoted by the Gita as possessing all the . . . qualities listed by Patanjali as pertaining to ishvara, namely, being transcendental to karma, of unsurpassed omniscience, teacher of the ancients, untouched by Time, represented by om, and awarding enlightenment. Krishna is not touched or bound by karma (Gita, IV.14, IX.9), and, in terms of omniscience, he is the beginning, middle and end of all (X.20 & 32), who pervades the entire universe with but a single fragment of himself (X.42). Krishna taught the ancients (here specified as Vivasvan, the sun god, who in turn imparted knowledge to Manu, the progenitor of mankind [IV.1]) and is himself Time (X.30 & 33; XI.32). He is also the syllable om (IX.17). And, of course, Krishna assures his devotees that he will free them from the snares of this world such that they attain the supreme goal (IX.30-32; X.X; VIII. 58). There is thus perfect compatibility between Patanjali’s unnamed ishvara and Krishna as depicted in the Gita.2

The commentarial tradition of the Yoga-sutras bears this out. Patanjali's major commentators were Vyasa (fifth century CE, not to be confused with the compiler of the Vedic literature), Vachaspati Misra (ninth century CE), Bhoja Raja (eleventh century CE), and Vijnanabhiksu (sixteenth century CE). All identify the ishvara of the Yoga-sutras with Vishnu or Krishna and show how the Bhagavad-gita expresses the culmination of all Vedic wisdom relating to yoga.

The Gita's Eight Limbs

The Bhagavad-gita addresses all eight limbs of raja-yoga, the form of yoga popular today as ashtanga yoga or hatha yoga.3 For example, yama, the first limb, consists of five ethical principles: truthfulness, continence, nonviolence, noncovetousness, and abstention from stealing. These fundamental disciplines of yoga are mentioned in the Gita, as is niyama, the second limb, which consists of things like worship, cleanliness, contentment, austerity, and self-reflection.

Now, the third limb of Patanjali's method, asana, is less obvious in the Gita. The term asana appears infrequently on Lord Krishna's lips. But when it does, it refers to "the place where one sits for spiritual practice." The Gita does not give tips on sitting postures. Its Sixth Chapter, though, comes close. Verses 11 and 12 state: "To practice yoga, one should go to a secluded place and should lay kusha grass on the ground and then cover it with a deerskin and a soft cloth. The seat [asana] should be neither too high nor too low and should be situated in a sacred place. The yogi should then sit on it very firmly and practice yoga to purify the heart by controlling his mind, senses, and activities and fixing the mind on one point."

Here Krishna uses the word asana in a general rather than technical sense. He is talking about sitting to focus the mind.

It's easy to lose focus, and that's basically Arjuna's argument against hatha yoga. In fact, Patanjali himself identifies nine obstacles on the path: doubt, disease, lethargy, mental laziness, false perception, lack of enthusiasm, clinging to sense enjoyment, lack of concentration, and losing concentration. His commentators list several others as well, including inordinate attraction to yogic powers, a misconceived view of meditation, oversimplification of yoga's eight limbs, and irregularity of practice. All of these problems are traceable to the difficult nature of Patanjali's method and are why Arjuna views hatha yoga as virtually impossible. By the end of the Sixth Chapter he denounces it as too difficult. Krishna agrees, telling Arjuna that the ultimate yogi always thinks of God. He further tells him that such meditation is real yoga, implying that using one's body and mind in Krishna's service is the perfect asana.

The Gita also discusses pranayama, or breath control, the fourth limb. Krishna says that yogis can use the incoming and outgoing breath as offerings to Him. He speaks about dedicating one's life breath to God. He tells Arjuna that His devotees' prana, or air of life, is meant for God and that Arjuna should use it "to come to Me." In fact, if one follows Arjuna's example and offers every breath to Krishna—by speaking about Him, chanting His glories, and living for Him—there is little need for breath control as delineated in Patanjali's sutras. Breathing for God is the essence of pranayama. Srila Prabhupada writes, "Chanting of the holy name of the Lord and dancing in ecstasy are also considered pranayama." (Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.23.8, Purport)

The fifth limb of yoga, pratyahara, deals with the withdrawal of the senses, a major subject in the Bhagavad-gita. In the Second Chapter Krishna tells Arjuna that the yogi withdraws his senses from sense objects, "as the tortoise draws its limbs within the shell." Taken superficially, this might seem to suggest full renunciation of the world. But that's not what Krishna is getting at. Rather, as other verses make clear, He's teaching how to renounce the fruits of work, not work itself, and how to be in the world but not of it. In other words, His teaching centers on how to withdraw one's attachment to sense objects for personal enjoyment. He instructs us to use these same objects in the service of God. That is true pratyahara.

The Upper Limbs

And then we have the culmination of yoga practice—the last three limbs of raja-yoga: dharana, dhyana, and samadhi, or concentration, meditation, and complete absorption.

While yama and niyama are preliminary steps, these three are called samyama, "the perfect discipline" or "perfect practice." Bhagavad-gita speaks extensively of these upper limbs. For example, Lord Krishna states, "Just fix your mind upon Me, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and engage all your intelligence in Me. Thus you will live in Me always, without a doubt. My dear Arjuna, O winner of wealth, if you cannot fix your mind upon Me without deviation, then follow the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga [abhyasa-yogena]. In this way develop a desire to attain Me." (Bg. 12.8–9)

The process of Krishna consciousness is practical dharana, or spiritual concentration. By seeing paintings of Krishna, we use our sense of sight for God; by chanting and hearing we engage the tongue and the ear; by offering incense to Krishna we engage our sense of smell. All the senses can help us engage in dharana, leading to advanced states of meditation and absorption.

The holy name is particularly effective in this regard. That's why Krishna says that of austerities He is the austerity of japa, private chanting, especially while counting on beads. Chanting is the king of austerities because by chanting we can easily reach the goal of yoga. It all comes together in the practice of japa because by chanting God's names we focus on Him with our voice, ears, and sense of touch. And kirtana, congregational chanting, not only takes us to deep levels of absorption but engages the senses of onlookers as well. In sutra 1.28, Patanjali, too, promotes “constant chanting.”

Overall, Patanjali's ambivalence might appear confusing. When he first mentions ishvara-pranidhana, dedication to God, he presents it as optional, while later he gives it far more attention, with six verses elaborating on the nature of ishvara. In the beginning he seems to allow variance in the object of meditation (1.34-38), but ultimately he advises the yogi to focus on ishvara, who in Patanjali's words is the “special supreme soul” who alone can bestow samadhi, yogic perfection.

Patanjali says in sutra 3.3 that samadhi occurs when the object of your meditation appears in your heart of hearts without any competitors or distractions. You have no other interest, as if your intrinsic nature loses meaning.

The Bhagavad-gita makes it clearer. In samadhi your intrinsic nature doesn't lose meaning. Rather, it takes on new meaning: You see yourself in relation to Krishna. You are now His devotee; He's the focus of your life. That state of perfect and total absorption is called Krishna consciousness.
Those too attached to family life, who forget that death comes in the future to take them away, become attached and unable to finish their duty as human beings. The duty of human life is to solve all the problems of life, but instead people remain attached to family affairs and duties. Although they forget death, death will not forget them. Suddenly they will be kicked off the platform of a peaceful family life. One may forget that he has to die, but death never forgets. Death comes always at the right time. The brāhmaṇa father of Jaḍa Bharata wanted to teach his son the process of brahmacarya, but he was unsuccessful due to his son's unwillingness to undergo the process of Vedic advancement. Jaḍa Bharata was simply concerned with returning home, back to Godhead, by executing devotional service through śravaṇaḿ kīrtanaḿ viṣṇoḥ [SB 7.5.23]. He did not care for the Vedic instructions of his father. When one is fully interested in the service of the Lord, he does not need to follow all the regulative principles enunciated in the Vedas. Of course, for an ordinary man, the Vedic principles are imperative. No one can avoid them. But when one has attained the perfection of devotional service, it is not very important to follow the Vedic principles. Lord Kṛṣṇa advised Arjuna to ascend to the platform of nistraiguṇya, the transcendental position above the Vedic principles.
traiguṇya-viṣayā vedā
nistraiguṇyo bhavārjuna
nirdvandvo nitya-sattva-stho
niryoga-kṣema ātmavān

"The Vedas mainly deal with the subject of the three modes of material nature. Rise above these modes, O Arjuna. Be transcendental to all of them. Be free from all dualities and from all anxieties for gain and safety, and be established in the Self." (Bg. 2.45)
Why is spiritual life so unstable?

Answer: It is not spiritual life that is unstable; it is we who are unstable in our spiritual life. And our instability is due to our having not yet recognized the gravity of gravity in spiritual life.

The gravity force in spiritual life

The force of gravity is a simple, real, undeniable fact of existence. If we neglect this force, we will naturally, obviously, inevitably be pulled down by it and will fall to disaster.
Material desires comprise a similar gravity force that acts on us by dragging our consciousness down to the material level. If we neglect this force, our consciousness will naturally, obviously, inevitably, be pulled down by it to sensual contemplations, and we will fall from our devotional standards to disaster.

The difference between these two gravity forces is not so much in how they act on us as in how we react to them. Our recognition of the reality of the gravity force that acts on physical objects is default and deep-rooted, so we take the necessary precautions instinctively. If we are standing and need to be seated, we don’t lower ourselves into thin air; we lower ourselves onto a chair.

However, our recognition of the reality of the gravity force that acts on our consciousness is usually casual and superficial, so we rarely take the necessary precautions instinctively. If we are doing a devotional activity that absorbs ourselves in remembrance of Krishna and need to engage in a worldly obligation, we rarely think whether that activity will preserve our devotional consciousness; we just start doing it. Metaphorically speaking, we shift from a standing position to a sitting position without checking whether there is a chair to sit on. No wonder then that the gravity force of our habitual material desires starts immediately acting on us and pulling us towards worldly indulgences. Consequently, our consciousness that was at one moment peaceful, even blissful, becomes at the next moment turbulent, even malevolent. The cause for this disconcerting change is straightforward: gravity.

Generating an anti-gravity force

If we don’t’ wish to be pulled down, we need to first contemplate on the reality and the gravity of this gravity force. This contemplation will impel, even compel, us to take seriously the Bhagavad-gita’s direction (8.7) to keep remembering Krishna even while doing our worldly activities. Remembering Krishna generates an upward anti-gravity force that can not only arrest our fall but can also propel us up.

We may wonder: how can we do both these things – remember Krishna and do our worldly duties - simultaneously? It is an art that we learn by practice and experience. Foundationally, learning the art requires an authentic and pervasive devotional intention, wherein we truly want to offer our full heart, our whole life, our entire being to Krishna. When this honest and fervent intention permeates our very existence, then all our activities – even our worldly obligations – will have a devotional purpose. Thereby we will be able to meditate on how the particular activity that we are doing is connected to Krishna, indeed, is meant for Krishna. This meditation will keep our consciousness at the spiritual level – or at least somewhere near it.

Of course, a life-defining devotional intention doesn’t appear automatically overnight; it needs to be carefully nurtured to maturity. For most of us at present, this intention is likely to be in a nascent stage. To ensure that it grows smoothly and swiftly, we need to invest adequate time in core spiritual activities that nourish us with divine happiness and thereby strengthen our devotional intention. These core spiritual activities include chanting, hearing and studying scriptures, engaging in Deity worship and rendering direct devotional service.
Investing adequate time in core spiritual activities doesn’t mean only weekend visits to spiritually vibrant temples or occasional pilgrimages to energizing holy places. It also means diligent engagement in our daily morning spiritual practices or sadhana. This sadhana acts as a daily generator of an anti-gravity force that counters the unavoidable effects on our consciousness of our worldly engagements. Our daily worldly activities expose us to material desires that pull our consciousness down towards materialism. In protecting contrast, our daily devotional practices engender within us spiritual desires that pull our consciousness up towards Krishna. If we don’t engage in sadhana daily, then we will have no force to counter or even check the gravity force of our default material desires. Consequently, we will fall freely, quickly, disgracefully to sensuality and immorality. Even if we engage in daily sadhana, but don’t engage in it diligently – if we engage in it ritualistically or mechanically or perfunctorily just to get it over with, then such sadhana will not generate an adequate upward force to cancel out the downward force. We will therefore undergo a slow downward fall that may eventually terminate in devotional misfortune. Our daily sadhana needs to be so intense that it generates a sufficient upward force, sufficient to not only reverse the daily downward motion but to also slowly but surely push us upwards closer and closer to Krishna.

Spiritualizing our worldly obligations

In addition to our daily sadhana, we need to spiritualize our remaining day as much as possible. Most of us can’t engage in directly devotional activities throughout our entire day – or even for a majority of the day. We spend much of our daily time in professional, familial or bodily activities. Though these activities may not be in themselves spiritual, they are still spiritualizable.

While trying to spiritualize these activities, we need to take a vital, indispensable precautionary measure: stay away from, or at least minimize contact with, stimuli that exert an overwhelming gravity force on our consciousness. These stimuli will vary depending on our specific history of past lapses and indulgences. We need to carefully ensure that we don’t unwittingly allow that black past to darken our present and future. If, despite our best efforts, we somehow get subjected to these provocative stimuli, we need to have an emergency action plan ready to counter their insidious effects. This action plan – which is essentially our personal SOS call to Krishna – can include earnest chanting, heartfelt praying, contemplating on an illuminating scriptural passage, recollecting an inspiring spiritual experience or contacting a trustworthy spiritual mentor or devotee-friend.
On a more positive note, the means for spiritualizing our worldly activities range over a broad spectrum that can include the following:

1.Having, whenever possible, a background devotional stimulus like spiritual music or a picture of Krishna or a fellow devotee as our work-partner
2.Taking, whenever practical, periodic short breaks to remind ourselves of our devotional purpose
3.Consciously offering to Krishna at their starting and ending those worldly activities whose nature and pressure makes it difficult to remember him while doing them.

There is no set standard formula for how each one of us can remember Krishna. This is not a deficiency, however. It is a facility, an opportunity to exercise our individuality and creativity within the scriptural framework for the practice of Krishna consciousness. Because all of us are unique and the worldly circumstances in which we function are also unique, we will need to improvise and innovate to find the ways that work best for us in preserving our devotional consciousness. If we show Krishna the sincerity and intensity of our desire to remember him, he will guide us, as he promises in the Bhagavad-gita (10.10). His guidance may come in the form of penetrating insights that enable us to see demonstrations of his teachings even in worldly events. Or it may come in the form of ideas and techniques by which we can remember him more and better while being externally engaged in worldly activities. Or it may come in many other ways – all of which make life in Krishna consciousness unpredictably exciting.

To summarize, by carefully cultivating remembrance of Krishna, we will not only prevent its dangerous yo-yo-like swings but will also preserve its steady upward trajectory towards Krishna.

Prabhupada: Yes. Everywhere. This is the age of forgetting God. We say it is Kali-yuga. Kali-yuga means the age of misunderstanding. And that is, I said, dirty things within the heart. So God is so powerful that if we chant the holy name of God, then we become purified. So our movement is based on this principle, chant the holy name of God. We give all facilities to everyone without any distinction that "You come with us. Come in our temple, chant Hare Krsna mantra, and take little prasadam, refreshment, and gradually you become purified." So if the government authorities give us facilities for this business, that we hold mass sankirtana, Hare Krsna, and give them little prasadam, then we are sure the whole place will change.

A Study in Mysticism
By His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
An explanation of the mystic techniques offered by the great
Teachers of Vedic wisdom—and their value to contemporary man.

The Goal of Transcendental Meditation

In The Bhagavad Gita, the Sanskrit word "Mam" is frequently used. This word means "unto me." Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead says, "unto Me" -- Krishna. We cannot interpret this in a different way. When I say, "Bring me a glass of water," it means that I am the person in want of the glass of water, and if you supply to me and not to others, then it is right. When Krishna says, "unto Me," that means Krishna. But philosophers are still interpreting -- they say "unto something else." Even grammatically this is wrong.

One who has developed attachment to Krishna is Krishna conscious. They say if you have attachment for your lover you always think of her. That is lover consciousness. It is natural. It is stated that a woman who has another lover besides her husband shows herself very attentive to her household duties, but is always thinking, "When shall my lover and I meet in the night?" This is an example: It is possible, in spite of our false engagement, if we love somebody, to think of him always. If materially it is possible, why not spiritually? That is the whole teaching of The Bhagavad Gita.

Antimatter as Devotion

This eternally existing antimaterial world is nonmanifested to the material scientist. He can at best only have information of its existence as being contrary to the modes of material Nature. Full details of the antimaterial realm can be known only from those infallible sources, the liberated authorities who have thoroughly realized the constitution of the antimaterial principle.

This information of the antimaterial world is therefore had by the aural reception of a submissive disciple of the Personality of Godhead. The Vedas or the Vedic knowledge was thus imparted into the heart of Brahma, the first living being in the created material world, and Brahma educated the great saint Narada in this transcendental wisdom.

So it is also with The Bhagavad Gita. The philosophy of the Gita was spoken by the Personality of Godhead long, long ago to the presiding deity of the Sunglobe, and when such knowledge was misinterpreted by breaking the chain of authoritative aural reception, it was repeated by the Personality of Godhead on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. At this time Arjuna took the place of Brahma and of the Sun god to receive transcendental knowledge from Sri Krishna. In order to drive out the misgivings of the gross materialist, Arjuna asked all relevant questions about the Lord, and all relevant answers were given by the Lord to the full satisfaction of a layman.

Those who are too captivated by the glamor of the material world cannot accept the authority of Lord Sri Krishna on account of their polluted life and unclean habits. Therefore, one has to become thoroughly clean in habit and heart before one can understand the details of the antimaterial world. And Bhakti Yoga -- which means the process of purification by devotional service, as enunciated in the Gita -- is the detailed and scientific program of spiritual activity for all beings, from the beginner neophyte to the highest perfection of the line.

The details of the antimaterial world are many times more extensive than the details of the material world. The material world is only a shadow representation of the antimaterial, and intelligent men who are clean in heart and habit will be able to know the facts about the spiritual sphere from the texts of The Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagwatam and similar Vedic scriptures.

The basic points of antimaterial knowledge areas follows: The presiding Deity of the antimaterial world is Sri Krishna, the original Personality, as well as His expansions into many plenary portions. Such Personalities of Godhead can be known only by antimaterial activities, commonly called Bhakti Yoga or devotional service.

The Personality of Godhead is the Supreme Truth and He is the whole antimaterial principle. Material principles as well as antimaterial principles are emanations from His Person. He is the root of the complete tree. When water is poured onto the root of a tree the branches and leaves of the tree develop automatically. And in the same way when Sri Krishna, the Personality of Godhead, is worshiped, all the details of all the worlds are given into the heart of the devotee, without laboring in the materialistic way. This is the secret message of The Bhagavad Gita.

Purport to Prayers of King Kulasekhara
By His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
This verse, prayer, is taken from one book known as Mukunda-mala-stotra. This prayer was offered by one king whose name was Kulasekhara. He was a great king, at the same time a great devotee. There are many instances in the history of Vedic literature that the kings were very great devotees, and they are called rajarsis. Rajarsis means: although they are on the royal throne, they are all saintly persons. So this Kulasekhara, King Kulasekhara, is praying to Krsna that "My dear Krsna, the swan of my mind may now be entrapped with the stem of your lotus feet. Because, at the point of death, the three elements of bodily functions, namely the mucus, and the bile, and the air, they will overlap, and there will be a choking in the voice, so I shall not be able to utter your sweet Holy Name at the point of my death.'' The comparison is given in this way, that the white swan, whenever it finds a lotus flower, it goes there and sports by diving into the water and entangling him in the stem of the lotus flower. So King Kulasekhara wants that in the healthy stage of his mind and body, he may be immediately entangled with the stem of the lotus feet of the Lord and die immediately. The idea is that one should take to Krsna consciousness while his mind and body is in good condition. Do not wait for the last stage of your life. Just go on practicing Krsna consciousness while your body and mind is in a healthy state, and then at the time of death you shall be able to remember Krsna and His pastimes and be immediately transferred to the spiritual kingdom.

Sukadeva Gosvami continued: Ajamila then saw three awkward persons with deformed bodily features, fierce, twisted faces, and hair standing erect on their bodies. With ropes in their hands, they had come to take him away to the abode of Yamaraja. When he saw them he was extremely bewildered, and because of attachment to his child, who was playing nearby, Ajamila began to call him loudly by his name. Thus with tears in his eyes he somehow or other chanted the holy name of Narayana. (Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.1.28-29)

Anxious to Save Themselves from Death

At the time of death people become very anxious to save themselves, especially those who have been sinful. Of course, the soul itself is not subject to death (na hanyate hanyamane sarire [Bg. 2.20]), but leaving the present body and entering into another body is very painful. At death the living entity can no longer bear to remain in his present body -- the pain is so acute. Sometimes when a person's life becomes too painful he commits suicide. But suicide is a sin punishable by the laws of karma.

When Ajamila was dying, he saw three ferocious and very frightening persons with ropes in their hands, unruly hair on their heads, and bodily hair like bristles. These assistants of Yamaraja, the Yamadutas, had come to drag Ajamila out of his body and take him to the court of Yamaraja. Sometimes a dying man cries out in fear when he sees the Yamadutas. Ajamila, too, became very fearful.

Fortunately, even though Ajamila was referring to his son, he chanted the holy name of Narayana, and therefore the order-carriers of Narayana, the Visnudutas, also immediately arrived there. Because Ajamila was extremely afraid of the ropes of Yamaraja, he chanted the Lord's name with tearful eyes. Actually, however, he never meant to chant the holy name of Narayana; he meant to call his son.

Bhagatji comes into the kitchen in Prabhupada's back garden every lunchtime to cook Prabhupada's chapatis. He is very expert at this and when I was learning to cook Prabhupada had me learn chapati making from him. Prabhupada likes Bhagatji very much, and so when Bhagatji brings the last chapati into the prasadam room for Prabhupada, he lets him sit and chats with him until the end of his meal.

I told Bhagatji today about my decision to not do any special vrata for Karttika. He was surprised and tried to cajole me into continuing, stressing that one must observe some special vrata in order to get the benefit of Karttika. But I held my ground. I told him that the observance of the vrata was useless if it meant I couldn't do my service to Srila Prabhupada. He conceded that it was a higher principle and relented.

Bhagatji also frequently attends managerial meetings and Prabhupada's afternoon darsanas. This afternoon at about 4:00 p.m. he brought some news about Nitai. He told Srila Prabhupada that he has been seen in Vrndavana with Yogananda dasa. Bhagatji was good friends with Nitai, and out of sentiment, he pleaded with Srila Prabhupada to allow him to bring Nitai to see him. He thought that if Srila Prabhupada could personally talk to him, he could straighten him out.

Prabhupada dismissed his request without prolonged discussion on the matter. "No. Unless he is prepared to come of his own accord, then what will be the use? Unless a man is submissive, then it is useless to speak with him."
Śrīla Bilvamańgala Ṭhākura has said:

bhaktis tvayi sthiratarā bhagavan yadi syād
daivena naḥ phalati divya-kiśora-mūrtiḥ
muktiḥ svayaḿ mukulitāñjali sevate 'smān

"If I am engaged in devotional service unto You, my dear Lord, then very easily can I perceive Your presence everywhere. And as far as liberation is concerned, I think that liberation stands at my door with folded hands, waiting to serve me — and all material conveniences of dharma [religiosity], artha [economic development] and kāma [sense gratification] stand with her." (Kṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛta 107)

In His Paramātmā feature, Kṛṣṇa is the old friend of everyone. According to Vedic injunction, Kṛṣṇa is sitting with the living entity side by side. According to the śruti-mantra (dvā suparṇā sayujā sakhāyāḥ), the Lord is sitting within the heart of every living entity as suhṛt, the best friend. The Lord is always eager to have the living entity come home, back to Godhead. Sitting with the living entity as witness, the Lord gives him all chances to enjoy himself materially, but whenever there is an opportunity, the Lord gives good counsel and advises the living entity to abandon trying to become happy through material adjustment and instead turn his face toward the Supreme Personality of Godhead and surrender unto Him. When one becomes serious to follow the mission of the spiritual master, his resolution is tantamount to seeing the Supreme Personality of Godhead. As explained before, this means meeting the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the instruction of the spiritual master. This is technically called vāṇī-sevā. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura states in his Bhagavad-gītā commentary on the verse vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana (Bg. 2.41) that one should serve the words of the spiritual master. The disciple must stick to whatever the spiritual master orders. Simply by following on that line, one sees the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Paramātmā, appeared before the Queen as a brāhmaṇa, but why didn't He appear in His original form as Śrī Kṛṣṇa? Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura remarks that unless one is very highly elevated in loving the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one cannot see Him as He is. Nonetheless, if one sticks to the principles enunciated by the spiritual master, somehow or other he is in association with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Since the Lord is in the heart, He can advise a sincere disciple from within. This is also confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā (10.10):
teṣāḿ satata-yuktānāḿ
bhajatāḿ prīti-pūrvakam
dadāmi buddhi-yogaḿ taḿ
yena mām upayānti te
"To those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me."

In conclusion, if a disciple is very serious to execute the mission of the spiritual master, he immediately associates with the Supreme Personality of Godhead by vāṇī or vapuḥ. This is the only secret of success in seeing the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Instead of being eager to see the Lord in some bush of Vṛndāvana while at the same time engaging in sense gratification, if one instead sticks to the principle of following the words of the spiritual master, he will see the Supreme Lord without difficulty.

A son and his father were walking in the mountains. Suddenly, his son falls,
hurts himself and screams: "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
To his surprise, hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain:
"AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
Curious, he yells: "Who are you?" He receives the answer: "Who are you?" Angered
at the response, he screams: "Coward!"
He receives the answer: "Coward!"
He looks to his father and asks: "What's going on?" The father smiles and says:
"My son, pay attention." And then he screams to the mountain: "I admire you!"
The voice answers: "I admire you!" Again the man screams: "You are a champion!"
The voice answers: "You are a champion!"
The boy is surprised, but does not understand. Then the father explains: "People
In the course of his pilgrimage, Sage Chyavana reached Prayag where Ganga and
Yamuna merge. He entered the river and stayed under water in the stage of
Samadhi. A big group of fish surrounded the sage and was in total peace with
him. The sage also was at ease with the fish around him and stayed thus for
twelve years. One day, a group of fishermen came to that place and threw big
nets into the river. Along with the fish, the sage also was caught in the nets
and the fishermen were surprised to see the sage along with the fish. The
fishermen were frightened and fell at the feet of Sage Chyavana and requested
for his forgiveness. They also asked him to give them further directions.
The sage reassured them that they did do not anything wrong and since he was
part of the catch, they should sell him for a suitable price. The fishermen did
not know what to do and went to their king Nahusha and reported the whole
matter and requested the king to come and take care of them.

King Nahusha came to see the sage along with his ministers and other staff. He
prostrated himself at the feet of the sage and expressed remorse at the actions
of the fishermen and requested the sage to guide them further. The Sage Chyavana
replied: “Oh King! What is there to feel bad? The fishermen did nothing wrong
and were simply doing their duty. There is no mistake from their side. Now
listen to my advice. Since I am their catch, they should be compensated and I
suggest that you compensate them suitably.”

The king was happy that the Sage was not angry with him or the fishermen and
ordered his ministers to pay the fishermen a thousand madas (some gold coins of
that era). The sage heard that and told the king and the ministers to pay a fair
and just price to the fishermen. The king went on increasing and finally offered
the whole kingdom, but the sage simply asked the king to sit and confer with the
ministers and decide the fair compensation.

The king and the ministers were wondering what to do when would great wise man
named Kavi Jatha came that way and he assured the king that he will fix the
suitable price for the sage and asked them not to worry. The king and the
ministers were very happy and were a relieved a lot. Then Kavi Jatha said, “The
value of a cow and a Brahmin is equal. Lord Brahma made cow as the cause of all
havis in yaga and the Brahmin as the head of all mantras. No one can fix the
price of a Brahmin or a cow. So, offer a cow instead of the sage to the
fishermen.” The king was pleased and went to the sage and told the sage that he
was incapable of fixing the rate for him and instead would offer a cow to the
fishermen. The sage was very happy to hear this and said: “Oh king! I am glad
that the proper value has been fixed. The cow is holy and contains Agni and
Amrita (the nectar). It is fit to be worshiped even by the gods. I am pleased
with your decision. So, give a cow to the fishermen.”
So, the king gave a good cow to the fishermen. They accepted the cow and then
went to the sage and bowed to him and pleaded with him that he had been very
kind to them and so he should kindly accept the cow from them. The sage was
pleased with their devotion and agreed. By the mercy of the sage, the fishermen
and the acquatics became purified and went to heaven. The king also became very
happy and from that time onwards began to worship the cows. The great sage then
returned to his hermitage.
